Natural sand is sand formed by the action of natural conditions and can be divided into river sand, sea sand and mountain sand according to the origin. The particle size of natural sand is generally below 5 mm, and it can be further classified into coarse sand, medium sand, fine sand and extra fine sand according to the fineness modulus.
Mechanized sand is sand processed through the process of soil removal, mechanical crushing, shaping, screening and powder control of rocks, pebbles or mine tailings. The grain size of the mechanism sand can be adjusted according to the actual needs and is suitable for different engineering requirements.
The coarseness of the sand is characterized by the fineness modulus (MX). The calculation formula for fineness modulus is as follows:
MX=[(A0.15+ A0.3+ A0.6+ A1.18+ A2.36)-5A4.75]/(100-A4.75)
MX a fineness modulus; A0.15 - particle size 0.15mm, the cumulative percentage of the upper particle sieve residue (%); and so on.
According to the value of the fineness modulus, the sand can be classified as follows:
Coarse sand: fineness modulus of 3.7 to 3.1, with an average particle size of 0.5 mm or more.
Medium sand: fineness modulus of 3.0 to 2.3 with an average particle size of 0.5 to 0.35 mm.
Fine sand: fineness modulus of 2.2 to 1.6, average particle size of 0.35 to 0.25 mm.
Very fine sand: fineness modulus of 1.5 to 0.7 and average particle size of 0.25 mm or less.
The selection of the appropriate sand aggregate type and particle size has an important impact on the performance and engineering quality of concrete. Coarse sand is used for projects requiring higher strength and durability, medium and fine sand for general projects, and extra fine sand is commonly used for special projects requiring finer surface quality.
