In the processing of metal ores, crushing is an indispensable step, and processing with crushers can significantly improve the ore grade. Currently, selecting a suitable crushing station has become a trend for improving production efficiency in open-pit metal mines. This article will introduce four common types of crushing stations for open-pit metal mines, along with their characteristics and applications.

Classification and Composition of Metal Mine Crushing Stations

Open-pit mine surface crushing stations can be classified according to the degree of fixation of the crushing equipment to the foundation: mobile, semi-mobile, semi-fixed, and fixed. As the name suggests, the degree of fixation of these crushing stations increases in this order. A crushing station usually consists of four parts: feeding equipment, crushing equipment, buffer silo, and discharge equipment. The feeding equipment includes a hopper, feeding belt, and vibrating feeder; the crushing equipment commonly uses gyratory and jaw crushers; and the discharge equipment is a belt conveyor.

Characteristics and Applications of Various Types of Crushing Stations

Semi-Mobile Crushing Station

A semi-mobile crushing station is installed on a suitable working level within the open-pit mine. As the working face advances, the crushing unit is moved as a whole or in parts using tracked transport vehicles or other traction equipment. A semi-mobile crushing station consists of feeding equipment, crushing equipment, a buffer silo, and discharge equipment. Its characteristics include no concrete foundation connection to the ground, no self-propelled function, requiring specialized moving tools for relocation, a service life of generally 2-5 years, and a relocation time of no more than 48 hours. It is usually located on the working bench of the mine.

Mobile Crushing Station

A mobile crushing station integrates feeding, crushing, and conveying. It uses tracked or wheeled locomotion and can adjust its position as the working face moves. A mobile crushing station consists of feeding equipment, crushing equipment, and discharge equipment, with jaw and toothed roll crushers being commonly used. The mobile crushing station has no concrete foundation connection to the ground and has its own self-propelled function, allowing it to closely follow the working face. Its main advantage is that it can be directly loaded into the crusher by an excavator, eliminating the need for truck transportation and reducing production costs. However, the working conditions are more demanding, requiring a minimum working platform width of 100 meters. Semi-Fixed Crushing Station

The semi-fixed crushing station is a transitional form in the development from fixed crushing stations to semi-mobile crushing stations. Its crusher frame is firmly connected to the ground, fixed to the stable side of the mining area. When relocating, only the equipment body can be disassembled and moved, while the foundation remains. A semi-fixed crushing station consists of a crane truss, feeding equipment, crushing equipment, buffer silo, and unloading equipment. The crusher is installed on a concrete foundation and does not have mobility. It can be relocated multiple times as the open-pit mining extends. The relocation time usually does not exceed one month, and the service life is typically no more than 10 years.

Fixed Crushing Station

A fixed crushing station has a permanent concrete foundation and remains in a fixed position throughout the entire service life of the open-pit mine. It is generally located outside the mining area and has a long service life. A fixed crushing station consists of a crane truss, feeding equipment, crushing equipment, buffer silo, and unloading equipment. Its characteristics are that the crusher is installed on a concrete foundation, has a firm connection to the ground, and does not have mobility, lasting for the entire lifespan of the mine. Fixed crushing stations are usually located outside the mining area boundaries or in the crushing workshop of the beneficiation plant.

Conclusion

Choosing the appropriate type of crushing station is crucial for efficient production in open-pit metal mines. Mobile, semi-mobile, semi-fixed, and fixed crushing stations each have their advantages and disadvantages. Selecting the right crushing station based on the specific conditions of the mine can significantly improve beneficiation efficiency, reduce production costs, and achieve efficient resource utilization.
