What is a sieving operation?

Sieving operations are usually used for the classification of materials with a particle size of 1 mm or more; however, in recent years, fine sieves have been successfully used for the classification of materials smaller than 1 mm, so that in industrial applications, the minimum sieve hole size reaches 0.05 mm.

Sieving operations are indispensable in the metallurgical industry. In addition, they are widely used in coal, construction, chemical and other industrial sectors. In mineral processing plants, screening can usually be used as an auxiliary operation, a preparation operation, or as a screening operation.

Screening operations can be divided into the following categories according to the different uses: (1) preparation screening.

(1) preparation screening. The loose material is divided into several levels, and then, respectively, sent to the next step in the process. Called the preparation of screening. For example, some iron ore in gravity separation before the crushed product is divided into coarse and fine particles with a screen, respectively, sent to different jigging machine for separation.

(2) Pre-screening. Before the material enters the crusher, the sieve will be used to sieve out the fines in the material that are smaller than the width of the crusher discharge, and the sieve will be used to crush the material in the width of the discharge into the crusher, so as to reduce the load of the crusher and avoid over-crushing the material. Almost all crushers are equipped with pre-screening operation before the crusher.

(3) Check Screening. The product of the crusher is screened so that the product on the screen (larger than the specified particle size) is returned to the crusher for re-crushing, and the product under the screen is the qualified product of the crushing section. Generally used only in the last section of the crushing operation.

(4) Independent screening. The material is screened into a number of particle size levels according to the user's requirements, directly as the factory product screening operation. For example, in the crushing and screening plant in the black all-generic mines, the high iron ore with a screen into different levels of particle size to supply high care refining: in the coal plant will be screened into different levels of coal size directly to the user.

(5) Selective screening. When the material in the useful components in the distribution of each particle level has a significant difference, can be separated by sieving the useful components of the particle level with the particle level containing less useful components. The former is used as coarse concentrate; the latter is sent to sorting process or discarded as tailings. This selective effect on the useful components of the screening operation, in essence, is a sorting process, and therefore also known as screening. In the iron ore magnetic separation process used in the fine screen is an example.

In addition, in mineral processing plants, sometimes the screening operation can also be used as dewatering, demineralization screening or washing screening.

Screening operations are generally used dry. However, for wet materials and materials with mud, dry screening is very difficult, need to use in the screen surface spray pressure water, the fine particles and mud will be washed down.
